Raising the Bar: Brisbane Boys College's Formula for Success with Mathspace

At Brisbane Boys College (BBC), the mathematics team is focused on helping every student thrive—no matter their starting point. Through a dynamic and supportive approach to teaching, Jeremy Hunter (Head of Mathematics) and Mitch Brockman (Mathematics teacher) are building a culture where students are challenged, supported, and motivated to grow.

Mitch and Jeremy discuss how Mathspace supports students at BBC

Teaching for understanding, not just answers

Jeremy and Mitch aim to move beyond traditional instruction. Their classrooms are built on a model where teachers guide, rather than instruct, and students take more ownership of their learning.

"I want students to walk out of the classroom saying, 'I can do this now,' even if they thought they couldn’t before," says Mitch.

To support this, students have access to a wide range of learning resources—including MiloAI, each student's own personal tutor. MiloAI offers helpful prompts when students are stuck. It’s not about giving answers—it’s about helping students develop confidence and deeper understanding.

"Milo AI doesn’t just give answers. It leads students to a deeper understanding – just like a teacher would," - Jeremy Hunter

Supporting all learners, stretching high achievers

From students needing extra support to honours students, BBC ensures every student is working at the right level. Jeremy and Mitch use a differentiated approach—building confidence with foundational tasks for some and assigning higher-level, complex questions to advanced learners.

One standout example: a Year 10 student who independently completed both Year 9 and 10 content over six months. With access to structured resources and in-class guidance, he accelerated into Year 11 Mathematical Methods a year early.

Data-informed teaching, student-led learning

Teachers use student growth data to adjust their support in real time. Whether a student needs extra challenge or focused revision, Jeremy and Mitch can track progress and respond with precision.

"Students can work independently, stretch themselves, or revisit content as needed. Our role is to guide them and make sure they stay on track," says Jeremy.

Advice for new teachers

When asked how he’d advise new teachers starting out with Mathspace, Mitch's message was simple: “Just give it a go. Explore the different features and see what works for your students.”

At BBC, high academic expectations go hand-in-hand with student wellbeing and support. With flexible tools and a clear teaching philosophy, Jeremy and Mitch are helping every learner find success.
