A smarter Skills Report: capturing every moment of student growth

We’ve just relaunched our Skills Report—and it now captures student progress from every piece of maths work done in Mathspace.

This means no more waiting for scheduled check-ins. Teachers will now see up-to-date grade level estimates, informed by real-time student activity—whether that’s from check-ins, assigned work, or independent practice.

Why the change?

Over the past year, we’ve heard one message consistently from educators: “I just don’t have time to run regular check-ins.”

Our previous Skills Reports relied heavily on data from those check-ins. When students didn’t complete them regularly, their grade level estimates stayed low—even when they were doing great work elsewhere in the program.

We knew we could do better. So, our engineering team tested new algorithms using real student data. Our goal: make Skills Reports more accurate and more useful, without creating more admin for teachers.

We’re excited to say that the updates are now live.

To get the most from this update, you may need to re-enable the setting to view all student activity. Look out for the banner in your Skills Report.

What’s new?

All work now counts toward grade level

The report now draws on all student activity in Mathspace. If a student has demonstrated knowledge through assigned work or practice, that progress will be included in their grade level estimation—even if they haven’t done a formal check-in.

This gives teachers a more complete view of student growth, without needing to set aside class time for regular assessments.

“Proficient” is enough

We’ve updated our calculations based on what we heard from teachers: “Proficient” is a reliable sign of understanding.

So now, a “Proficient” (3️⃣) score contributes fully to a student’s grade level. If a student later achieves “Mastered” (⭐), it will still be recorded—but it won’t alter the grade level further.

This change recognises what many educators already know: students don’t need to master every skill to be ready for the next step.

Focus on the enrolled course (not lower grades)

Previously, the report required students to demonstrate understanding across every skill from lower year levels to lift their overall grade level.

Now, we’re focusing the report’s attention—and your teaching time—where it matters most.

If a student shows solid knowledge across part of a lower grade, we’ll assume that understanding holds across the full grade unless we see evidence of gaps. Students will still need to show full knowledge at and above their current course level.

Early estimates, faster feedback

You’ll now see overall grade level estimates much sooner. Once a student records ten correct answers (from anywhere in Mathspace), their overall grade level will appear.

Strand-level estimates will unlock once a student reaches ten correct answers in that strand.

This means you’ll get clearer insights earlier in the term, without needing to wait for full check-in data.

Optional pre-tests to uncover gaps

We’re also introducing short pre-tests you can assign to help surface any hidden gaps in understanding—particularly in lower grades. Students can then practise those skills to fill the gaps before moving on.

Stay tuned—we’ll be rolling this out soon.

We’re excited to bring you a smarter, more responsive Skills Report. These updates are just the start—we’ll continue listening to your feedback and using real classroom data to guide our next steps.
